Brass Band Buizingen, Belgian Champions 2012

November 27, 2012

Sunday 25 November Brass Band Buizingen and myself won the national title in the well filled Lemmensinstitute. We will now have the honour of representing the country at the European Brass Band Championships to be held next year in Oslo (Norway) on  May 3rd and 4th.
Eight brass bands have locked horns for contesting the title in the championship section. In the morning each group presented the set piece Energy (Robert Simpson). After having played third, Brass Band Buizingen left the podium with a positive feeling following an excellent performance. But to win, they would have to deliver two of those performances.
In the afternoon, we entered the stage as the last band to play. The own choice piece was When Worlds Collide (Nigel Clarke).
Composer’s Note: When Worlds Collide seeks to recreate the atmosphere and feeling of the American cult Sci-Fi movies of the 1950’s such as Robert Wise’s 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still and Invasion of the Body Snatchers directed by Don Siegel in 1956, as well as Rudolph Maté’s 1951 movie When Worlds Collide. When Worlds Collide is subtitled with programmatic sub-sections: 1. Crop Circles – 2. Lights in the Sky – 3. Strange Happenings – 4. Sightings – 5. “We Come In Peace” – 6. Alien Abduction – 7. Analysis of the Earthlings – 8. Teleportation – 9. New Understandings – 10. Visions of Far Off Worlds – 11. Colonization!
Brass Band Buizingen produced a unique interpretation, rewarded with a standing ovation.
The three adjudicators (Ian Brownbill, Simon Dobson and Steve Sykes) declared Brass Band Buizingen winner with a score of 279/300 in the set and 288/300 in the own choice piece. 94.50% proved to be a comfortable margin ahead to win the national championship!

Brassband Buizingen (Luc Vertommen): 279 + 288 = 94,50 %
Festival Brass Band (Dirk De Caluwé): 267 + 291 = 93,00 %
Brassband Willebroek (Frans Violet): 270 + 276 = 91,00 %
Brassband Heist (Bert Van Thienen): 258 + 285 = 90,50 %
Noord-Limburgse Brassband (Yvan Meylemans): 261 + 279 = 90.00 %
Brassband Zele (Bart Van der Strieckt): 252 + 267 = 86,50 %
Brassband Leieland (Wouter Loose): 243 + 270 = 85,50 %
Kortrijk Brassband (Ward De Ketelaere): 249 + 261 = 85,00 %

Congratulations to all bands!
