Exciting news!!

November 15, 2017

It’s been quiet on this site for almost a year now! But that doesn’t mean that nothing happened, on the contrary!!

Besides concerts, tutoring and orchestra tours, I spent a lot of time creating a new project called doux together with the talented composer Stan Nieuwenhuis.

Stan and I have been friends for quite a while now and we decided to do something totally new and – I admit – a little crazy. Like we mention on our Facebook-page (feel free to follow: “doux” on Facebook):

It’s hard to put “doux” in a box or to give it a label. It has a new, fresh sound, influenced by jazz, electronic music and brassband music.

Stan wrote the entire score and was inspired by a series of photographs of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island around the start of the 20th century. The photographer asked all of them to dress up in their traditional outfits they brought from home. He was very moved by this and decided to compose a series of tracks each based on a portrait of a person.

The official CD-release happened on November 7th at the Red Star Line Museum in Antwerp, the departing point of Belgians emigrating to the U.S.A. at the end of the 19th century. And here’s the crazy part: the second presentation of our project will be on Ellis Island, NY – thus the destination of said emigrants from Antwerp!

Could it be any more symbolic??

Have a listen to some samples on Facebook and if you like it: don’t hesitate to buy the CD on itunes or, if you like to have a piece of artwork (by Willem Hoebens) at the same time, to buy the CD by clicking on this link: doux

Busy schedule

Next week I’ll be playing as a soloist with the mighty Flowers Brass Band at the Brass in Concert competition in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) – lots of music to learn by heart!

In December Stan and myself will travel to the U.S.A. for a few concerts in Wisconsin, Minneapolis (both me as a soloist as well with doux – more details in the agenda section) and Chicago where we will perform at the renowned Midwest Clinic. Right after that we will be moving on to New York City to perform at the Buffet Showroom and hold the presentation/concert on Ellis Island (we’ll be spending New Year’s Eve there as well – why not? Right?).

2018 is going to be pretty heavy in terms of traveling. Just to name a few:

  • U.S.A
  • Lithuania
  • UK
  • Brazil
  • New Zealand
  • Tonga

are already confirmed – no time to rest but it’s going to be amazing!
